Assessment #2

This semester i have learnt about google, blogger, del.icio.us, flickr, CSS, RSS, iTunes, iWeb, html, templates technorati, counters and ftp. I have three calendars in google - my personal calendar, the AFL calendar and the Australian holidays calendar. I have also created a gmail account in order to post things onto my blog, and I've learnt how to use google docs which is handy as it saves them on the internet and you can access them from anywhere. Since assessment #1 I have really changed the layout of my blog - I have changed the colours and fonts, added favourites (Athene, del.icio.us, Flickr), RSS (weather and MPI 104), a counter and a profile. I have 46 webpages bookmarked in del.icio.us - these include sites to do with my course, everyday sites such as banking and email, and sites that I'm interested in such as photography. I have 33 images on my flickr account - some are mine from my Canning Stock Route trip, others are interesting ones off the internet (sources listed as descriptions). I have created a webpage using html, and then created a webpage using iWeb which i have uploaded to Athene. I have looked at iTunes and how you can subscribe to different things such as guitar lessons or whatever, and how you can burn different types of cds. I have also learnt about RSS, CSS, FTP and technorati. I had a fair bit of trouble creating my webpage second time around because I couldn't save it in iWeb ... I had about four goes at it before it actually worked. It has less information and links on it then I would have liked but I tried to do all of the requirements and anything else was a bonus.

Counters

Counters are used to count how many times a website is visited. This can be in total or for specific IP addresses. For example, if you look at the same site 5 times off the one computer, it will only register as having been visited one time only. Counters are useful to see how popular your website is, if it is working and what kind of people look at your site.

RSS

RSS (really simple syndication) is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines, and podcasts in a standardised format. Google reader is a web based aggregator which read RSS offline and online.

Technorati

My understanding of technorati is that it is a search engine specifically for blogs. It competes with other search engines such as google and yahoo. Technorati authority is the number of blogs linking to a website in the last six months. The higher the number, the more Technorati Authority the blog has. Your rank is how far you are from the top - the smaller your rank, the closer you are to the top.
I currently have no authority and my rank is 10, 280, 644.

My Webpage

This is the beginning of my webpage ... there is a lot to learn. It is kind of exciting to learn about but frustrating at the same time! I will keep working on it from here on in..

FTP

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a network protocol used to transfer data from one computer to another through a network such as the internet. The disadvantages of FTP are that it is very insecure - passwords are sent in clear text so it is easy for outsiders to access the information. To minimise the risk of this happening, you can use Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP). An advantage of FTP is that it doesn't discriminate against different operating systems - it is both pc and mac compatible.
